BIM Capability Assessment for U.S. AEC Firms

Start with a free read on where your BIM practice stands today, then go as deep as your firm actually needs, from a directional score to a full consultative review tied to your real project data.

Most firms answer "how mature is your BIM practice" with a feeling, not a number. Excelize’s free BIM readiness quiz gives you a directional read in minutes. Are you a Starter, Warrior, Achiever, or Guru? For firms that want more than a directional score, we run a deeper consultative assessment against your actual project data, benchmarked to the maturity framework built into NBIMS-US, so the answer holds up in a proposal, not just a conversation.

What It Is

What is a BIM Capability Assessment?

A BIM Capability Assessment is a structured read on where a firm’s BIM practice stands today. Excelize offers this at two levels. The free readiness quiz gives any firm a quick, directional score across a few core questions, useful for a fast gut check on where you land relative to peers. The consultative assessment goes further. It’s a structured review of your actual project data, current tools, and team proficiency. We evaluate your practice against ISO 19650 information management principles and current LOD standards. This produces a documented score a firm can use externally, in an RFP response, a lender conversation, or a board update, not just internally.

The cost of guessing at BIM maturity

01

A sentence, not a score

An RFP asks for a BIM maturity statement, and the response ends up being a sentence someone wrote from memory rather than a documented score with a framework behind it.

02

One good project, assumed as the norm

Leadership assumes the firm is "ahead" of its peers on BIM because one flagship project went well, without a structured view of whether that quality is consistent across the rest of the portfolio.

03

Investment with no baseline

A firm evaluating BIM investment, new software, new hires, and an outsourcing partner has no baseline to measure the investment against, so six months later, nobody can say whether it actually moved the needle.

That gap rarely surfaces in a way that's easy to point to. It shows up as a client asking a specific compliance question during due diligence, and no one on the call has a number to give them.

What We Deliver

What our BIM capability assessment includes

Free Readiness Quiz

A quick, self-serve scoring tool giving any firm a directional read on where they stand, Starter through Guru, in minutes, with no commitment required to take it.

Consultative Maturity Review

For firms that want more than a directional score, a structured conversation and document review evaluated against current BIM standards and your firm’s actual practice, covering technology, process, and team proficiency.

Software And Tool Utilization Read

A look at which tools your teams actually use day to day versus what’s licensed, since firms often carry capabilities they aren’t using on live projects.

Project Sample Review

Where a firm wants a deeper read, a review of a small sample of recent project models against LOD and coordination standards, so the assessment reflects delivered work, not just stated process.

Findings Summary

A short, written summary of where the assessment lands and what would move the score fastest, sized to be genuinely useful in a proposal or an internal conversation with leadership.

Path Forward Recommendation

A direct, honest read on whether Strategy Consulting, Adoption, or neither is the right next step for your firm, given what the assessment finds. Not every assessment needs to lead to a bigger engagement.

Our Process

Our BIM capability assessment process

01

Start With The Free Quiz

Any firm can take the free readiness quiz for an immediate directional score. This is available with no sales conversation required.

02

Scope The Deeper Read

For firms that want more, we scope a short intake covering current tools, team structure, and, where useful, a small sample of recent project models.

03

Review And Benchmark

We review what's shared and evaluate it against current LOD standards and your stated practice, looking at where the real gaps sit versus where the firm assumes they sit.

04

Findings Summary

We deliver a short written summary of the read, in plain language, that your leadership can act on or hand to a client directly.

05

Recommendation

We tell you honestly whether the next useful step is Strategy Consulting, Adoption, both, or neither, based on what the assessment actually found.

Who This Is For

A read that meets your firm where it is

Some firms just want the quick quiz result to settle an internal question. Others need a documented score they can put in front of a client or a lender, which is where the consultative review earns its place. A few know exactly which gap they're worried about, model quality, tool utilization, staff depth, and want the assessment to go deep on that one area rather than a broad sweep. All three are legitimate starting points, and the scope adjusts to which one you're actually solving for, rather than defaulting to the most thorough version regardless of what you need.

The free quiz gives you a directional score in minutes, useful for a quick gut check. The consultative assessment is a deeper, structured review of your actual tools and project data, producing a documented finding you can use externally, not just an internal directional read.
This is the read. Strategy Consulting is the roadmap built from what the read finds. Some firms stop after the assessment because they only need the number; others move into Strategy Consulting once they have it.
Typically, a few days to a week from intake to the findings summary, depending on whether a project model sample is included in scope.
For the free quiz, nothing. For the consultative review, having a general sense of your current software stack and, if you want a deeper read, access to a recent project or two helps us scope accurately.
Yes, for the consultative assessment. It's evaluated against ISO 19650 information management principles, a recognized industry framework, not a certification Excelize holds or issues, so it's built to be shared, not just read internally.
That's useful either way. A lower score usually points to something specific and fixable, such as tool underutilization or inconsistent standards across offices, rather than a firm-wide problem.
Yes. That's exactly how it's designed to work. There's no obligation to move into the consultative assessment just because you took the quiz.
