MEP clash detection is the automated process of identifying spatial conflicts between MEP systems — and between MEP and structural/architectural elements — within a federated BIM model before construction begins. A hard clash occurs when two objects physically overlap in 3D space — a duct passing through a structural beam, a pipe intersecting an electrical conduit, or MEP equipment conflicting with an architectural element. Hard clashes are the most common type and the most expensive to resolve on-site.
A soft clash occurs when an object violates the clearance zones or maintenance access requirements defined for another object. Soft clashes are critical in healthcare, industrial, and data center projects where access requirements are strictly enforced.
A workflow clash relates to construction sequencing conflicts identified when the BIM model is linked to the construction schedule (4D BIM). Trades scheduled to work in the same space at the same time, equipment delivery conflicts, and phasing conflicts are all identified before mobilization begins.
